Restricted Library Services to Swansea University Undergraduate Nursing and Allied Health Students.

From 1 August 2010, Swansea University Undergraduate Nursing and Allied Health students will no longer be able to borrow items from this library.

Students can continue to use the library for reference only. This includes the use of PCs and photocopier. (Photocopies are charged at 10p per sheet).

This is now the policy of all NHS libraries within ABM.

UpToDate is now available to all staff of ABMU. UpToDate is an evidence based summary of conditions and treatment for clinical staff.

It can only be accessed through a ABMU Health Board PC.

A-Z Fulltext Electronic Journals

A new service is available to ABMU employees. We now offer access to over 4,000 fulltext electronic health journals.

The service is called A-Z and can be accessed via the ABM libraries webpage at

http://www.wales.nhs.uk/abmlibraryservices

You will need to register for an NHS Athens password. This can be done in work from the libraries page. Once registered the service can be used at work and at home.

NPC updates

The NPC has issued 3 bulletins.

MeReC Monthly includes four articles. The first article focuses on the NPCi lipids patient decision aid, which the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) highlighted in its guideline on cardiovascular risk assessment and lipid modification. The second article discusses the serious adverse effects of antipsychotics in people with dementia. The third article draws attention to the forthcoming Department of Health review of the inappropriate prescribing of antipsychotics to people with dementia. Finally, the fourth article considers patients’ experience and perception of using hypnotic drugs for the treatment of insomnia.

MeReC Bulletin discusses three current issues in the drug treatment of asthma: the safety of high dose inhaled corticosteroids, particularly in children; the safety of long-acting beta2 agonists and how they should be prescribed for the maintenance treatment of chronic asthma; and the use of a budesonide/formoterol (Symbicort®) combination inhaler as both maintenance and reliever therapy. It also highlights the importance of stepping down treatment when asthma control has been achieved, in accordance with the BTS/SIGN British Guideline on the Management of Asthma.

MeReC Extra No 35 considers the recommendations from the recent NICE guidance on type 2 diabetes with an emphasis on the importance of using evidence-based interventions to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events. It also discusses the importance of not focussing unduly on the control of blood glucose at the expense of other measures for managing cardiovascular risk. Recent evidence around the use of intensive control of blood glucose (the ACCORD and ADVANCE studies) is also reviewed.
